About PMP

Programming Māori Potential (PMP) is a Digital Startup Accelerator that introduces rangatahi Māori to business and tech using hackathon and design thinking methodologies.

PMP uses a hybrid of methods to deliver a unique initiative to our rangatahi such as an elongated Startup Weekend delivered over 6 weeks, and a 2.5-day Wānanga/Hackathon which ends with a pitch to potential investors. As well as that, PMP will also provide up to 4 weeks post-Hackathon advisory support to assist our rangatahi with taking their potential solution/prototype/product to market.

PMP aims to support rangatahi Māori (targeted at 17-19yrs) through the design thinking and lean start-up process. Throughout the 10 weeks, rangatahi will explore entrepreneurship and 21st-century skills such as problem-solving whilst gaining exposure to digital technology and connecting rubbing shoulders with industry leaders, mentors, and entrepreneurs.

Delivery & Structure

Rangatahi will be split up into 5 teams of 5 participants in each region, equating to 25 rangatahi per region and 125 rangatahi across 5 regions of Aotearoa.

The 10-week programme will consist of:

Each team will be assigned a Kaiarahi (Mentor) who will support participating rangatahi on their journey to creating a digital-tech solution to a community problem.

Kaiarahi will facilitate 2-hour weekly sessions with rangatahi throughout the programme.

After week 6, all participating teams will attend a 2.5-day wānanga and showcase event where they will rub shoulders and work with industry and tech experts to develop a prototype/ product for their solution.

At the end of the wānanga, the teams will then present their solutions to a panel of judges who will declare the regional winner to progress on to the national finals.

The winning teams from all 5 regions will have the opportunity to go to Hawke's Bay to pitch their solutions and prototypes to a panel of judges made up of tech experts, entrepreneurs, and potential investors.
